The Ascent: Give a Retired Guard a New Job

✦ CORE PATH
From Experiment 13’s material (or fresh): identify ONE guard — manager or firefighter.
Write it a short letter, three paragraphs: Para 1 — SERVICE RECORD: “You started when I was xx year-old. Your post: . You worked ___ years without thanks.”
Para 2 — RETIREMENT FROM EMERGENCY: “The war you were hired for is over. [Child] is guarded now — by me. You may stand down.”
Para 3 — NEW POSITION: offer a role using its skills in life’s service: Critic → quality-reviewer-after-the-fact; Controller → planner-with-open-hands; Firefighter → trainer-for-discharge; People-Pleaser → kindness-director-including-self…
Read it aloud, alone. Notice the body’s response — softening, tears, absurd laughter, a yawn (yawns often accompany settling — welcome them).
Check: reread tomorrow. Does it still feel true, or did yesterday’s letter embarrass today’s? Either result informs — stability means the reassignment took; embarrassment means the guard renegotiated. Fine. Renegotiations are conversations, and you now speak guard.
Conclusion: protectors do not die; they promote. A system whose guards become allies runs differently at every level — and you, tonight, hold two signed transfers.
Closing formula: every symptom is a staircase. Most people sweep the top step forever. You now own the descent — behavior to question to guard to child to truth — and the ascent that turns guards into family. This is the engine of everything Part Two does next.
